Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-a-thon

Good Morning, today is the the Dewey’s 24 hour Read-a-thon. I have been doing this now for about 4 years and I love. This year the goal for the read-a-thon is to collectively read 1,000,000 pages. That is right ONE MILLION pages, there is a counter at the top of their web site to show how the group is doing. There are always some opening questions that each person answers.

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? Northern California, USA
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? I don’t have a stack.
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? Did not plan for this either. Maybe the rosemary popcorn.
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I have a GSD who is not a happy girl right now. Thursday she had to have teeth pulled, she is 13 years old.
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? I will try to move more.

Dewey’s Wrap Up Post

I am still worn out from reading, it is exhausting getting up at 4:45am to read. But it is so worth it. I read two books and listened to a few short stories, so I am not exactly sure of my word count. I read The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson and Binti by Nnedi Okorafor. Both amazing books.

I took a bread about 11am and did some errands that took longer then I thought they would. I ate only two of my snack items! The hummus and pita chips, then a candy bar. For lunch we went to Amy’s Drive-IN and got the extra spicy vegan burger it was so good.

\On Sunday to recover from mostly sitting all day I made a loaf of sourdough bread, and then worked on my possum belly bakers table. I was able to put two coats of the new oil stain on it. That means on Wednesday when it is dry, I can start waxing it. I know woodworkers out there might be wondering why I am not using a sealant. Well, the table is over 100 years old and I want to put a wax seal on it. Do it the hard way, but it is looking beautiful, it I may say so. Once it is all done I will post before and after photos of it.

Decades of Reading

One of the mini-challenges for Dewey’s is called decades of reading. It is hosted by Just One More Thing, and it is a fun challenge that requires some thought. So here are my decades.

1970’s Nancy Drew by Carolin Keen
1980’s Lord of the Rings by Tolkien
1990’s The Ivory and the Horn by Charles de Lint
2000’s Harry Potter by JK Rowling
2010’s Hounded by Kevin Hearne

As of right now for the read-a-thon I have read two books one 622 pages and that is The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wlkerson and then a book called Binti by Nnedi Okorafor who is fast becoming one of my most favorite authors.

Dewey’s Mid-Event Survey

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I had an appointment at noon then had to go to Costco, and Target I just got home.
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I am so tired, I just want a nap, but if I nap I do not sleep at night.
